Versa HTS1
Details
While Versa speakers are designed with aesthetic features that make them suitable for displaying in nearly any room, the Versa HTS1 was first and foremost designed for great sound and the high volume performance demanded by surround sound systems.
The key ingredients for achieving high performance from an On-Wall design:
1.) A solid cabinet with minimal resonance
Most "shallow" speaker designs employ a plastic or metal enclosure. The upside is they are cheap to make and the "walls" of the cabinet barely contribute to the speaker's overall depth. But the downside is a cabinet that almost always resonates, coloring the sound, and very often making dialogue difficult to distinguish. In our research, we determined early on that we would sacrifice an extra inch of depth in favor of a sturdy, albeit more expensive, wood (MDF) cabinet.
2.) An enclosed cabinet with passive radiators
We use two 6.5" passive Kevlar cone radiators instead of a typical port to extend the bass performance and keep the lowest frequencies tight and controlled. In most speakers, an opening in the cabinet called a "port" is included to help extend the bass frequency response. In fact, we employ tuned ports in many of our other designs. The only significant downside to a well-tuned port is that the air pressure released from the port can be significant. In most installations this is not a problem, but when you place a speaker behind an acoustically transparent theater screen, pressure from a port can create an unwanted "wiggle" in the screen. The Versa HTS1 does not have a port but we are able to still achieve great bass with the inclusion of the two passive radiators.
3.) High-end components
In addition to the two passive drivers described above, the Versa HTS1 includes two active 6.5" Kevlar cone drivers featuring non-resonant polymer baskets and a 1" silk dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet and a custom extended rear chamber for improved frequency response. Why a polymer basket? Strength, weight, and lack of resonance. Polymer baskets are extremely strong while remaining light weight. They also do not exhibit the resonance or "ringing" often associated with many metal baskets.
A 2nd-order crossover made with quality parts effortlessly directs the full frequency signal across these active components. Other features, such as compression terminals and high quality jumpers (included) that allow for a standard, bi-wire, or bi-amp installation, complete the high-performance package.
How we made the Versa beautiful and versatile:
In addition to unsurpassed performance from an on-wall design, the entire Versa line was created with aesthetics in mind. The design presents the illusion of a single long wood cabinet with grille cloth strategically placed to conceal the speaker drivers (woofers and tweeters) installed within. The illusion is achieved with the combination of two solid wood "end caps" and a wrap-around grille cloth "sock", both of which can be replaced with alternatives that more perfectly blend with or compliment your room's decor.
