Versa SB1
Details
While Versa speakers are designed with aesthetic features that make them suitable for displaying in nearly any room, our first and primary objective was designing a line with great sound in a compact form-factor.
The key ingredients for achieving high performance from an On-Wall design:
1.) A solid cabinet with minimal resonance
Most "shallow" speaker designs employ a plastic or metal enclosure. The upside is they are cheap to make and the "walls" of the cabinet contribute very little to the speaker's overall depth. But the downside is a cabinet that almost always resonates, coloring the sound, and often making dialogue difficult to distinguish. During development, we determined early on that we would sacrifice an extra inch of depth in favor of a sturdy, albeit more expensive, wood (MDF) cabinet.
2.) A Passive Design
Too many on-wall speakers today sacrifice audio quality and flexibility for the convenience of on-board electronics. While these “all-in-one” designs can sometimes be simpler to install, they are often extremely limited in terms of performance. Need more power? Not possible. Internal amplifier not working? Discard the whole soundbar. By using a passive design which takes advantage of standard amplifiers and A/V Receivers, you decide what features are most important. Chances are, you already have an A/V Receiver ready to go!
What about a subwoofer? As with any small form-factor speaker, HTD recommends that an appropriate subwoofer be integrated with any Versa Soundbar system for maximum performance.
3.) High-end components
The Versa SB1 includes a single active 4" glass-fiber cone driver featuring a non-resonant polymer basket, paired with a 1" silk dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet and custom extended rear chamber for improved frequency response. Why a polymer basket? The answer is simple - strength, weight, and lack of resonance. Polymer baskets are extremely strong while remaining light weight. They also do not exhibit the resonance or "ringing" sometimes associated with metal baskets.
How we made the Versa beautiful and versatile:
In addition to unsurpassed performance from an on-wall design, the entire Versa line was created with aesthetics in mind. The design presents the illusion of a single long wood cabinet with grille cloth strategically placed to conceal the speaker drivers (woofers and tweeters) installed within. The illusion is achieved with the combination of two solid wood "end caps" and a wrap-around grille cloth "sock", both of which can be replaced with alternatives that more perfectly blend with or compliment your room's decor.
Every Versa speaker is shipped with a black grille cloth sock and glossy black lacquered end caps. A variety of specialty socks and end caps can be purchased separately for a virtually endless combination of customized speakers.
