No point reinventing the wheel. Dolby® (a pioneer in the world of surround sound) has a really great interactive tool to help you plan for, and arrange, a room full of speakers connected to your home theater receiver.

Surround sound speaker layouts are typically represented in the following format: X.Y.Z, where . . .

  • X = number of speakers used for front left, center, right, and surround locations
  • Y = number of subwoofers connected to the Low Frequency Effects (LFE) channel
  • Z = number of Atmos (height) speakers

Whether it's for a dedicated theater room, or your family TV room, if you're looking to set up more than stereo, Dolby has the best guidance for optimal speaker placement for 5.1, 7.1, 7.1.4, etc.
